Max is a 2015 heart warming movie that l was hesitant to watch. It just didn’t sound like too much fun. I am so glad that we made time to watch it. It’s a great little movie about a young boy and a dog who have to help each other heal after a loss. Unless you’re a cold hearted snake, you will enjoy it. It reminds you of those old time adventure kids stories like Rin Tin Tin or the Hardy Boys mysteries. Perfect for kids of of all ages.
Max is a Marine service animal whose job is to help find hidden caches of weapons, bombs or anything that needs tracking. His handler, Kyle is killed while on duty (under very mysterious circumstances that looks to me like friendly fire). Max is traumatized and becomes aggressive towards others. He is therefore useless to the Marines, and as such is scheduled to be put down. The only person he responds to is to Justin, Kyle’s younger brother he meets at the funeral. Adults may be jaded, but from the view point of a kid, it’s great.

Kyle and his little family decide to adopt Max in order to avoid his fate. Slowly, ever so slowly, the dog and his new master bond. In the meantime, Kyle’s best friend, Turner, who was also in his platoon comes home. Of course the dog reacts violently to him (dogs always know!). Turner does everything he can to turn Justin’s father against Max. Justin’s mother, a stoic and religious woman does her best to keep peace between the boy and his father. She is played by Lauren Graham, our very own Lorelai from the Gilmore Girls, and she does a superb job here, right alongside Thomas Hayden Church as the father.
The sub plot is very engaging too, especially to younger people (like me ) Turner, up to no good, even when out of uniform is in cahoots with some bad guys in this little Texas town. It becomes a race against time as Justin, his 2 friends, ( his bestie, a very lily livered young man, and the bestie’s cousin, a spitfire, fearless girl with a love for dogs, who helps Justin train Max) and Max must get to the bottom of the nastiness, save his family and once again, save Max who has been framed.
You will really like this movie as it encompasses so many various elements. Love, warmth, comedy, tragedy and especially loyalty ..everything wrapped up neatly. I liked it even more as l am most definitely a dog lover. I wish my beagles could sniff things other than food :-)! This is a movie that is suitable for everyone. Family matters in the end.
Have you seen the movie Max? Does it sound like a movie you would like to see? Have you had a dog with a good BS detector? I had a dog who totally hated my ex-boyfriend (the whole 2 years! I was an idiot that could have saved myself a lot of heartache by kicking him to the curb as soon as l saw the dog’s dislike for him, live and learn :-). What about you? any great stories?
