Some of the cast of Wild Tales

Wild Tales is a collection of insane and extremely delightful short stories from the mind of Damian Szifron, an Argentinian film maker.  His style reminds me of that other demented writer and director Pedro Almodovar. There are elements of Quentin Tarantino thrown in there for good measure. The original Spanish title is Relatos Salvajes. One reason l like this movie is that it is hard to pigeon hole it into a single genre. It has drama, comedy and suspense. The tag line of the movie is “All may lose control”, and boy..do they ever!

Wild Tales are about every day people who have been picked on, are depressed, or oppressed sometimes and who finally reach their boiling point and snap. It is very dark humor, but ultimately satisfying. The end results are sometimes grim, sometimes absurd, but nonetheless very gripping. I think everybody can identify with some of the characters.

Revenge is a dish best served cold!

There is a total of 6 tales told. The first one is quite grim, and it was a bit shocking as l thought it had been ripped from recent headlines. Then l realized this movie was actually made in 2014, before the infamous incident. I don’t want to reveal too much of the movie and kill the suspense. A couple of the scenes are a just a wee bit lackluster, but they are overwhelmed by the other slickly told tales. You sit there watching it, and picturing what you would do if the same things that these people had to endure was happening to you. I discovered that l have a devil inside me, as l think if l snapped, l would do severe damage..very severe. I caught myself saying “I would so do this, and then some” :-).

It’s dark, it’s very funny! I totally loved it. I was so happy with the first 5 stories and was a bit disappointed when l realized the last tale was a love story. It started out sappy enough, but then took an unpredictable turn that had me in stitches and then turned wicked. Definitely not your typical love story. You gotta see it. I can’t ruin it for you :-).

Happily ever after?

Happily ever after?

Wild Tales won a total of 23 awards, including several Argentinian Oscars. It was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It totally deserves it. It is wicked, and kept me entertained till the end. I can’t wait to be fluent in Spanish so l could watch movies without subtitles. I compare it to getting a tapas sized plate of 6 wonderful dishes, leaving you completely full and satisfied.

I highly recommend watching Wild Tales! It is that good! :-).
